Therapeutic Uses

Antineoplastic (anti-cancer) – Traditionally, red clover has been used as a treatment for cancer, especially breast, ovarian and lymphatic. Recent research is supporting these traditional uses for cancer.

Balances Metabolism, Cleanses the Blood – Red Clover assists with improving metabolic functions. Red clover is also considered a blood tonic, cleansing the body when taken internally. Your skin is the largest organ of elimination in your body, and if you are not processing wastes well via the digestive system and liver, your skin may develop rashes, itching and scaly patches.

Conjunctivitis – Use an infusion of red clover as an eye bath for conjunctivitis.

Infertility – Red clover is believed to assist with the treatment of infertility. Its estrogenic activity may help women with hormonal imbalances.

Insomnia – Taken internally red clover soothes the nerves and promotes calm sleep.

Respiratory system (Colds, Coughs, and Expectorant) – Red clover assists with soothing coughs, bronchitis and whooping cough. For this, the flowers are made into a syrup. Take as a tincture, infusion or syrup, especially for colds.

Skin healing agent – Red clover assists with treating skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and other chronic problems. Red clover can also be used topically when made into a compress, cream or wash. Use a compress for relief from arthritic pains, gout and athlete’s foot. The freshly crushed flowers can also be applied topically to soothe stings and insect bites.

Red Clover Side Effects: Safe in normal amounts, but consult a physician if you are pregnant or nursing. Pregnant animals have had miscarriages after grazing heavily on clover.

Red Clover Drug Interactions: Taking red clover along with birth control pills might decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. Taking red clover along with estrogen pills might decrease the effects of estrogen pills. Taking red clover along with some medications that are broken down by the liver can increase the effects and side effects of some medications. Taking red clover along with medications that also slow clotting might increase the chances of bruising and bleeding. By affecting estrogen in the body, red clover might decrease the effectiveness of tamoxifen (Nolvadex). Do not take red clover if you are taking tamoxifen (Nolvadex).
